February-March 2007

Ume (Plum)

Ume (Plum): It's that time of the year for plum blossoms again. In my neighborhood, the flowers are sparse this year compared to the previous years. I hear people saying that the trees weren't cared for properly, but I wonder if it might be the result of global warming. In any case, if you look up close, each flower is looking beautiful as ever and giving people much joy. It made me think about how people could also live in a beautiful manner, giving more joy and love to others. That would be a global warming that we can live with.

Yakei (Night Scene)

Yakei (Night Scene): A post card style image of Tokyo. However, I think it's nice to take a moment to relect on the city we live in, or had once lived in, and appreciate its beauty.

December 2006

Kage (Shadow)

Kage (Shadow): Holiday season is here, but the airport is fast becoming a dreadful place to be with all the increased security measures taken for air travel. Yet, these airports are full of drama when you take a moment to look around. Sometimes, a simple shadow on the wall can be very interesting as it leaves your imagination to figure out the rest of the story.

Funadaiku (Boatbuilder)

Haikyo (A Ruin): This resort hotel along a coastal highway has not seen any guests in over 20 years, yet the rooms are full of relics hinting life that once occupied these premises. Today, the vacancy sign is still up ... but in the Twilight Zone.

Funadaiku (Boatbuilder)

Funadaiku (Boatbuilder): A fine craftsman is an endangered species these days. Mr. Sueshiro Sano is one of Japan's leading boatbuilders who still builds sailboats out of wood. Each boat is handcrafted, without the use of computers, and completed with a beautiful mahogany interior. web link graphic Mr. Sano's Web site

Yugure (Sunset).

Yugure (Sunset) : A beautiful sunset over Tokyo can be forgiving to the narrow streets clutterd with vending machines and ugly telephone poles that seem characterize this city.

August 2006

Tsuyu (Rain Season).

Yakatabune (Roofed Boat): With one of longest rainy seasons out of the way, it's finally starting to feel like summer in Tokyo. When the heat is in, what's a better way than to spend a cool evening out than on the waters with friends and family aboard one of these party boats.

June-July 2006

Tsuyu (Rain Season).

Tsuyu (Rain Season): June is the wet time of the year in Japan, and this year it feels like it started a month early. On a rainy night, there is a lot of beauty to be found with reflections occuring on the pavement, such as this pedestrian crosswalk in Shibuya resembling the Stars and Stripes.

May 2006

Spring rice planting.

Taue (Rice Planting): May and June is a time for transplanting rice seedlings from the nursery into the rice paddies such as this farmer is doing in the Oku-Aga region of Niigata Prefecture.
